Sport fishing in the Northwest Territories
Experience unforgettable fishing north of 60 in the pure, clean waters of Blachford Lake. Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye (Pickerel) and Whitefish are in abundance, and some of them so big you won't believe your eyes. For 25 years, the lodge has been a haven for great catch and release fishing.
Our Lodge, located 90 Kilometres east-southeast of Yellowknife, can only be reached by charter float
aircraft and is the only lodge on the lake. This seclusion ensures the environmental integrity
of the lake and ample stocks of fish for the future. This also provides the ideal setting
for a relaxed northern experience you won't forget. Trout,
Pike and Whitefish fishing is on 17 Kilometre long Blachford Lake,
but Pickerel can be fished on two adjoining lakes, Magrum and Grace Lake,
a very short walkover from Blachford Lake. Our guides can introduce you to
the best techniques and make suggestions for maximizing you chances for success.
You are invited to use the boats and outboard motors on your
own or with a Blachford guide. Rod and reels are available to rent
and lures and tackle and lure kits can be purchased at the lodge.
Fishing Licenses can be purchased at the lodge or in Yellowknife before you arrive. |

RECOMMENDED GEAR
We suggest you bring light to medium weight spinning or casting equipment with 8-14 lb. test line for Pike and Trout. Walleye and Whitefish are fun on ultralight gear (4-8 lb. test). We recommend 12-18" ball bearing leaders for Pike.
As ice is off Blachford Lake in early June, this season provides for exciting fishing for all species near the surface.
From mid-July to late-September, Lake Trout are normally found at depths of 50 to 200 feet,
while Pike and Walleye are in 10 to 25 feet of water. Steel or lead core trolling line with
a downrigger or ciscoes can be used for trout in the mid-season or you may prefer to drift |
fish over deep holes using 14 or 16 lb. test monofilament and "buzz bombs".
Pack your fly rod with seven weight line, an 8-12 lb. tippet or shock tippet, and 100 yards of
backing for early season lake trout and hungry marathon pike. |

The fly hatch for Whitefish is normally late July or early August. Proven Whitefish flies are: mayfly, caddis cased larvae, caddis nymph, caddis fly adult and gold ribbed hare's ear. Northern Pike will strike a mouse fly, frog fly and large leech. Lake Trout will strike a Doc Sprately streamer and large sparkle streamer.
When trolling for Pike and Trout we suggest ciscoes or a selection of small to
large spoons: five of diamonds, Len Thompson, crocodiles and rainbow crocs,
buzz bombs and other running lures, Dare- devils, rapallas and deep runner shadraps.
For Walleye and Whitefish light spinning equipment with jigs, rapallas and Mister Twisters should
|
 | give good results.
It is now the law in the Northwest Territories that anglers use only barb-less hooks. At
Blachford, we have been doing this for years!
We have always actively encourage a barb-less, "catch & release" program, however, you may
keep a few small fish for a "shore" lunch or bring them back to the lodge for our chef to prepare a delicious meal for you.
The Shore lunch is a great Blachford Tradition. Delicious food from our kitchen is set up buffet style
at the shore lunch island screened shelter.
 |
Each boat of anglers is permitted to bring two to three small fish that are cleaned and cooked over open fires. If you want to know 'how fresh is fresh?'-- come join us at shore lunch Island!
All the fish you can eat pan fried over an open fire, salads, fresh vegetables, soup on cooler days, home made bread and cookies, juice, soda, and something from the bar to whet your whistle. It is one of our favourite summer activities!
Conservation
We are committed to maintaining a healthy stock of fish, and to achieve this we have
initiated a three-part fish management program:
| |
1. Use of barbless hooks and fish gloves.
2. Catch and release - With the exception of keeping a small fish or two for shore lunch and dinner, all other fish are to be carefully released.
3. Trophy Release Contest - Since 1981, Blachford has offered two annual prizes of a return
weekend trip for one to the lodge, to guest(s) "catching and releasing the largest Lake Trout and the largest Northern Pike. In the recent past, winning entries have included a 38 lb. Lake Trout and a 28 lb. Northern Pike.
Caught fish may not be taken from the lodge facility to Yellowknife.
