Lake Trout are the most common
fish caught in the NWT. Lake trout inhabit the deep, cold northern
lakes and occasionally the fast- flowing rivers. The world record
catch, weigh- ing 32.5 kg (72 lbs) was made at Great Bear Lake.
In spring and fall lake trout are found in shallow water, while in
mid summer they may be deeper. Commonly taken by trolling
spoons such as the ruby eyed wiggler, 5 of diamonds, and
wolverine special or large plugs and crankbaits, they can also be
caught by casting or vertical jigging with lures and jigs. Fly
fisherman are also successful when the trout are shallow using
streamer patterns.
