Northern pike are the
earliest fish to spawn in spring, and inhabit weedy bays or warm,
slow rivers south of the treeline. Pike are excellent fighters
with long, spotted greenish brown bodies and prominent snouts. Average
weights range from 2 - 7 kg (5 - 15 lbs), but
pike weighing 13 to 18 kg (30-40 lbs) have been taken. Pike
are aggressive fish and readily hit spoons, jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits.
They can be caught by trolling in mid season, but in
spring when they are in the shallow bays, casting is the best method. Spring
is also a good time for fly fishers to cast streamers and
large topwater patterns.
