Arctic Grayling are common
throughout the NWT. These spirited little
prize-fighters are easily identified by their very large,
blackishblue dorsal fins. They have dark blue-black backs and
greyish purple sides. Spring spawners, they are commonly found in
swift, cold rivers, and can also be found in lakes at the river
mouths. Ave- rage weights: 0.5 - 1 kg (1 - 2 lbs), with fish up to 4
lbs. caught every year and can be caught using lures or
flies. Flyfishing is the most common method, with surface patterns,
nymphs and small streamers all being effective. Spin fisherman do
well with small spinners, spoons and jigs.
