The northeast portion of British Columbia includes vast wilderness of mountain peaks, roaring rivers, serene lakes, flower-filled valleys and breathtaking waterfalls. This area includes the northern portion of the mighty Rocky Mountains and contains some of the most rugged and remote areas in this famous mountain range. Wildlife populations abound here and are unparalleled in any other place in British Columbia. Caribou, Moose, Stone Sheep, Mountain goats, Elk (Wapiti), Wolves, Coyote, Lynx, Wild Fox, Wolverine, Marmots, and Marten, as well as a healthy population of Black and Grizzly bears can be found here. This mecca for wildlife is the reason the area is known throughout the world as the 'Serengeti of the North'. Adventure lodges in this area offer an opportunity to participate in wildlife safaris, helicopter tours, river and lake fishing and hiking. In the winter, this area offers some of the most remote and extreme heli-skiing and heli-boarding in North America. The world famous Alaska Highway, with Mile 0 at Dawson Creek, winds it way along the Rocky Mountains, eventually crossing into the Yukon.
