TRIP DETAILS

Trip Highlights
Day 1:
Arrive in Fort Simpson. If flying, your guides will meet you at the airport. If driving plan to arrive at South Nahanni Airways by 10:00 am. Last minute questions and concerns can be addresses at this time. Flight over to the river. Overnight in camp on the river.
Day 2:
Preparation day for the trip and hike to Rabbit Kettle Lake. Overnight in camp.
Day 3 to 4:
Begin canoeing portion. This is a fairly easy portion of the river where you can learn necessary canoeing skills from your guides or brush up on techniques. Mountains and valleys will dominate the landscape. Overnight in tent camp along the river.
Day 5:
Virginia Falls is your destination. You will camp here for two nights. You may encounter other campers here.
Day 6:
The day can be spent exploring and photographing the area surrounding the falls. Weather permitting, you may want to do an all-day hike to the summit of Sunblood Mountain.
Day 7:
Today you will portage around the falls. After lunch you will embark on an exhilarating run through the rapids of Painted Canyon. Overnight in camp along the river.
Day 8:
You will enter Third Canyon. Keens eyes may spot woodland caribou, moose and Dall's sheep. Stopping at The Gate and Pulpit Rock for lunch, you will hike to the top of the canyon for a bird's eye view of the narrow gorge below. Camp will be downstream of Pulpit Rock and The Gate.
Day 9 to 10:
Today you will paddle through Big Bend and Second Canyon and past Headless Creek. Camp is in the vicinity of Deadmen Valley.
Day 11:
Highlights today will include First Canyon, Canada's deepest river canyon and Lafferty's Riffles and White Spray Springs. After stopping at Kraus' Hot Springs for a soak in the 37C natural springs, you will leave the canyons and carry on to camp in the area known as The Splits.
Day 12:
While negotiating the huge meanders prior to the native village of Nahanni Butte, you will experience the river valley opening up to meet the forested flat lands. Camp will be near the village.
Day 13:
Paddling down the Liard River will take you to Lindberg's Landing where you will have a chance to shower, treated to a BBQ and overnight in a cabin.
Day 14:
Picked up by vehicle and transported to Fort Simpson and to the airport.
