TRIP DETAILS

Trip Highlights
Day 1:
Arrival in Fort Simpson by air or road. Charter flight to Virginia Falls (weather permitting). This breathtaking flight takes you over the spectacular Ram Canyon and then up the Nahanni River to Virginia Falls. You will camp at the Falls the first night and will have time to walk and explore/photograph this area..
Day 2:
After breakfast your guides will complete the portage of camp equipment. You will have time for another trip to the falls for photographs in the creative morning light. Participants are asked to portage their own pack 2 km. to the 'put in' below the falls. Most of this is on a boardwalk and down hill. Lunch is served on the cobble beach below the Falls. Following a safety talk, you load the rafts and begin your descent. Leaving the roar of the Falls behind you, you will ride high on the waves through the Painted Canyon. The excitement continues with your passage through Figure Eight Rapids. You find your camp close to the mouth of the Flat River.
Day 3 to 6:
The next four days you start back on the river where you float along the foreboding Funeral Range and enter Third Canyon (35 km) where the Nahanni cuts a passage just past Mary River. Floating silently, all are gripped with awe at the 1200 m canyon walls rising skyward above the river. You will camp at The Gate in view of Pulpit Rock. A short hike to above the Gate affords a magnificent vista of the valley below. You continue on through Third and Second Canyon (15 km) into Deadmen Valley, known for its legends and mystery. This spectacular open valley offers numerous exploratory options. Following an exciting run through George's Riffle, you drift between the sky-high walls of First Canyon which reach heights of over 1400 m. This 26 km canyon will lead you to the soothing water of Kraus' Hot Spring. You then bid farewell to the canyons and make your way to the Splits, a maze of delta-like islands.
Day 7:
You will be met by a river scow with motor and be whisked through the slow meandering Nahanni delta to the Native village of Nahanni Bute (Pop. under 100). Remote, yet surprisingly modern, a stroll into town provides insight into a culture far removed from most of North America. Following refreshments from the village store you will continue down stream to Blackstone Landing and Lindberg's Bed and Breakfast. Hot showers, delicious meals, log cabin accommodation and the trip end celebration awaits.
Day 8:
After breakfast a van will return everyone to Fort Simpson to catch flights home.
