ABOUT THIS REGION  BACKPACKING

Chilkoot Trail backpacking expedition

Retrace the steps of the Klondikers on this historic backpacking expedition along the Chilkoot Trail. One hundred years ago, thousands of hardy men and women struggled over the Chilkoot Pass and down the Yukon River to the Klondike Goldfields. The Northwest Mounted Police required that all people had to carry their grubstake, one year's provisions, with them. For some, this meant more than 20 trips over the Chilkoot Pass carrying their heavy backpacks. Driven by the hopes of unbelievable riches, they overcame great obstacles just to find out that they were too late! Today, you will retrace the Stampeders route one-way over the Chilkoot Pass. Reminders of their passing lie everywhere but you will carry a light load and have a different goal: your treasure lies in the adventure itself!

Chilkoot Trail backpacking expedition

Your adventure includes a scenic drive from Whitehorse, to Carcross and over the White Pass to Skagway, Alaska. After a visit to this historic town, you will continue to Dyea and the start of the Chilkoot Trail. Most days will require 3-5 hours of hiking with one challenging 8 hour day over the pass. The trip ends at Lake Bennet where a floatplane will fly you back to Whitehorse.
