ABOUT THIS REGION  CANOEING - RIVER TRIPS

Canoeing on the Yukon River

Travel back in time to the goldrush days on this canoeing adventure. Come and canoe the section of the Yukon River considered the most scenic and historically significant. We have selected these rivers for their history, wildlife and scenic landscapes. You will be paddling wilderness rivers, suitable for novices yet will satisfy the experienced paddler. The Klondike goldrushers used the river to reach the goldfields in Dawson. Old telegraph stations, log cabins, abandoned settlements, and grave sites are but a few of the reminders of this epic period. Sunken hulls and the relics on Shipyard Island recall an era when paddlewheelers transported settlers, goldseekers, and supplies up and down the Yukon River.

Canoeing on the Yukon River

The river has since returned to its natural state. Shorelands and islands are covered in aspen, birch and poplar. Beaver, wolves, bears and eagles, along with large populations of migrant waterfowl, call the river home. The relaxed pace of this trip leaves plenty of time to explore and to enjoy the surroundings. Experience the thrill of discovery, the same thrill that must have been present for the earliest explorers of the river. And those who choose to paddle into Dawson City, can easily imagine the excitement that permeated the Klondike goldrushers as they approached the end of their long journey and the beginning of their dream of riches.
