ABOUT THIS REGION  CANOEING - RIVER TRIPS

South Saskatchewan River historical voyageur tour

DAVID THOMPSON, famous Canadian explorer, voyageur, map maker & fur trader once paddled this great prairie river. He made many epic journeys by canoe to expand the fur trade in Canada and bicentennial celebrations of Thompson's life & work are taking place continent-wide in 2007. On this 2-day trip, get acquainted with the travels of this remarkable man by reliving his canoe journeys on the South Saskatchewan River and visiting the sites of the ancient fur trade posts where he lived & worked in his early career with the Hudson's Bay Company. Downstream from Batoche National Historic Park at South Branch House archaeological site, you can read the 1787 post journal in Thompson's handwriting & learn of the massacre at the fort and its destruction in 1794. Across the river are visible remnants of the Northwest Company fur trade fort that Thompson visited during his clerk's apprenticeship at South Branch House. This is a must-do trip for history and archaeology aficionados and anyone fascinated with Canadian heroes.

South Saskatchewan River historical voyageur tour

The South Saskatchewan River gathers water mostly from the eastern slopes of western Canada's Rocky Mountains. It crosses the prairies of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan as it eventually makes its way eastward to Hudson's Bay. From Lake Diefenbaker, the river's fresh waters flow northward through the City of Saskatoon and eventually to its confluence with the North Saskatchewan River. The David Thompson historical voyageur tour takes place in a scenic stretch of the river a 100 km downstream of Saskatoon.
