Whitewater canoeing on the Hess River Yukon

Experience some of the best whitewater paddling in Canada on this canoeing or kayaking expedition on the Hess River. This package offers two weeks of wilderness, wildlife, and whitewater. You will canoe/kayak with raft support on Class II to IV whitewater. The Hess has the most consistent whitewater in the Yukon. Your adventure begins with a flight via small charter plane to Keele Lake. The group will travel light, with inflatable canoe, small rafts and, or kayaks. Keele Peak is the highest point in the Selwyn-Mackenzie Mountains, which form the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Keele is a huge circular, stand-alone massif, surrounded by valleys with small trees. The massif contains glaciers radiating out from the peak, and covering an area 10 km by 10 km. The first 2 days will be spent exploring Keele peak and the area.

After a short portage you will meet the Hess River and some of the biggest rapids of the trip. The Hess River flows west towards the Steward River. This is a true wilderness trip, a long way from roads and people, the river flows through a rich wildlife habitat, you are often rewarded by animals sighting. Colorful canyons, pristine wilderness and whitewater, it is a trip you won't want to miss.

Season: August 17, 2009 to August 30, 2009
Requirements: Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, water bottle, daypack, matches, insect repellent.
Suggested Items: Camera, daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle.
Suggested Clothing: Waterproof rain gear, long pants, sweater, warm jacket, windshell, shorts, long underwear, warm socks, hat, bathing suit, sneakers, hiking boots, neoprene booties.
Difficulty: Intermediate

Equipment Provided: Self-bailing suport rafts and equipment, camping and cooking equipment, dry bags, inflatable canoes or kayaks and equipment.
Transportation: Trips originate and end in Whitehorse, Yukon. Flight from Whitehorse to Keele Lake included.
Accommodations: Accommodations are in campsites along the river.
Meal Information: All meals included while on the river.
Guide Information: The guides are all anxious to show you the best possible time on your holiday. In addition to working hard to ensure your trip is memorable, our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and the latest river rescue techniques. These experienced and highly qualified paddlers have grown up on Yukon rivers.
Weather Information: Average summer temperatures range between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Weather can be unpredictable and high winds and low cloud cover can occur, reducing the travel speed on the river.
