Fly in fishing on Blachford Lake

Experience unforgettable lake fishing north of 60 in the pure, clean waters of Blachford Lake. Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye and Whitefish are all in abundance, and some of them so big you won't believe your eyes. The lodge has recently released lake trout close to 40 pounds and northern pike close to 30 pounds. For more than 22 years, Blachford Lake has been a haven for superb catch and release fishing. Located 60 air miles southeast of Yellowknife, the lodge can only be reached by charter float aircraft and is the only lodge on the lake. This seclusion ensures the environmental integrity of the lake and ample stocks of fish for the future. This also provides the ideal setting for a relaxed northern experience you won't soon forget. At this lodge you'll find lake trout, northern pike and whitefish. Walleye can be fished on two adjoining lakes, Magrum and Grace Lake, a very short walkover from Blachford Lake. Experienced fishing guides can introduce you to the best techniques and make suggestions for maximizing your chances for success.

Upon your arrival, you are shown to your own individual cabin or room in the main lodge. After an introductory tour of the lodge and facilities, some secrets of lake fishing at Blachford will be revealed to you. We suggest you bring light to medium weight spinning or casting equipment with 8-14 lb. test line for pike and lake trout. Walleye and whitefish are fun on ultralight gear (4-8 lb. test). Steel leaders for Pike are a must. As ice is off Blachford Lake in early June, this early season provides for exciting fishing for all species near the surface. From mid-July to late-September, lake trout are normally found at depths of 50 to 200 feet, while pike and walleye are in 10 to 25 feet of water. Steel or lead core trolling line with a downrigger or ciscoes can be used for trout in the mid-season or you may prefer to drift fish over deep holes using 14 or 16 lb. test monofilament and heavy jigs, jigging spoons or buzz bombs. Pack your fly rod with seven or eight weight line, an 8-12 lb. tippet or shock tippet, and 100 yards of backing for early season lake trout and hungry pike. The fly hatch for whitefish is normally late July or early August. A lighter fly rod and line for whitefish is advised. Proven whitefish flies are: mayfly, caddis cased larvae, caddis nymph, caddis fly adult and gold ribbed hare's ear. Northern pike will strike a mouse fly, frog fly and large leech. Lake trout will strike a Doc Sprately streamer and large sparkle streamer. When trolling for pike and lake trout, ciscoes are deadly and small to large spoons are very effective. Suggestions include: five of diamonds, red devils, black devils, crocodiles and rainbow crocs, buzz bombs and crankbaits such as deep running rapalas. For walleye light spinning equipment with jigs or rapalas will give good results.
