ABOUT THIS REGION  CANOEING - RIVER TRIPS

Canoeing expedition down the Coppermine River

Retrace the steps of John Franklin as you canoe down the Coppermine RIver, a remote and beautiful arctic river. Flowing to the Arctic Ocean, the Coppermine River is famous for its nesting raptors, including gyrfalcons, peregrine falcons and eagles. The Coppermine River offers a combination of flat water and challenging big water rapids that makes this canoeing trip the ultimate adventure for the avid canoeist. This 140 mile trip begins at Fairy Lake River and ends at the community of Coppermine. Come and experience the wildlife and unequaled beauty of the 'Land of the Midnight Sun'. Offers some spectacular arctic char fishing.

Canoeing expedition down the Coppermine River

From its headwaters at Lac de Gras, the Coppermine River flows swiftly down to its mouth at the Coronation Gulf of the Arctic Ocean. On its northern route, the river descends through a variety of land forms. The river begins in the stark Arctic tundra, passes through the dense spruce forests in the Redrock and Rocknest Lakes region, and ends up descending through the low lying mountain ranges and rolling hills of the barrenlands. This company provides the best ratio of guide to guests in the north (the single most important factor influencing the quality of your trip) and sets the highest standards for guides knowledge and natural interpretation.

Canoeing expedition down the Coppermine River

Season: July 4, 2010 to July 17, 2010
Requirements: Sleeping bag and pad, sunglasses, sunscreen, day pack, insect repellent, water bottle, pocketknife, matches, whistle.
Suggested Items: Camera (waterproof), binoculars, flashlight, bug jacket, fishing gear.
Suggested Clothing: Clothing that will keep you warm and dry. Clothing made out of polypropylene, polyester, wool and silk are best for dryness. Rain gear, warm jacket, long pants, sweater, hat, gloves, rubber boots.
Difficulty: Advanced/Difficult
Restrictions: Participants must have previous whitewater experience. Tandem canoe trips are very skill-specific and careful thought must be applied when assessing your canoe skill level before committing to Class III White Water. Pre-requisites: You have canoed previously and know the rudimentary strokes: bow, reverse, "j", draw, pry and sweep. You are comfortable paddling in the bow and working with another partner or you have river reading skills and can control the canoe from the stern while working with another partner. You have completed a whitewater canoe course. You are able to read Grade III water and quickly formulate strategies while working with a partner to navigate. At least once a year for the two previous seasons or more, you paddle Grade II/III whitewater with friends or a canoe club. You are committed to at least one "warm up" trip or course prior to the planned trip this season. We can modify these requirements by the use of "canyon rigs" for the rapids but this must be discussed before booking.

We strive for the most consistent level of knowledge of flora, fauna, geology, geomorphology and cultural human history.
