ABOUT THIS REGION  FISHING DAY TRIPS - RIVERS

Fly fishing schools with Jim & Lynda McLennan

Learning from an expert is an excellent way to improve your methods, techniques and knowledge about fly fishing and trout behaviour. The McLennans have been teaching fly fishing in Alberta for over 30 years, and have a sound reputation. They offer a variety of fly fishing schools throughout Alberta. You may wish to learn how to 'listen' to the river, and understand what it’s saying. The focus of the 'Listening to the River' school is observing the river and its surroundings in order to develop a fishing plan. The course is designed to be flexible to the students' preferences, river conditions, weather, the trout, and insect hatches. The McLennans also teach 1 day intermediate fly fishing schools. These schools are for those flyfishers who want to take their fishing experience to the next level. Their 2 day intermediate fly fishing school is for fly fishers with some preveious experience. Students receive dry land and on-the-water instruction and will join the McLennans for dinner at a local restaurant the first evening. This school covers casting, fundamental dry fly, nymphing, and streamer techniques, as well as basic streamside entomology. Young fly fishers (12-17) can discover the world of fly fishing. This three hour course, is intended to help them discover a passion for this great sport. This is a dry land course that covers the basics of equipment, basic knots, entomology, fly selection and casting. These schools are all taught on Alberta's Crowsnest River. Their 6 session (2 hours per session) progressive fly fishing school for beginners is held in Okotoks, Alberta with some hands-on time on the Bow or Sheep River. Looking to learn more about fishing big rivers? The 1 day Bow River Intermediate School with Jim McLennan will help unlock the secrets of this great, but puzzling river. For those looking for a learning fishing vacation, the Wilderness Fly Fishing Schools held on an inaccessible portion on the Oldman River are perfect. Held at the Anchor B Ranch Fly Fishing Lodge, this 2 day program is suitable for beginners and intermediate fly fishers to participate together. The topics covered include tackle selection, casting, reading water, dry fly, nymph and streamer methods, and entomology. The Anchor B is an ideal place to focus on fly fishing. The fishing opportunities, the setting, and the amenities of the ranch are first-rate. 2 nights accommodation and all meals are included, and of course excellent instruction from Jim & Lynda. Its private setting also ensures you'll find solitude on this fantastic trout water. Additional days can be added for an extended fishing experience. The lessons learned on these courses can be applied to any trout stream.

Fly fishing schools with Jim & Lynda McLennan

Jim McLennan is a well known fly fisherman, author and instructor. Jim was one of the first guides on Alberta's legendary Bow River, working the river from 1976-1982. During that time Jim introduced many famous fly fishers to the wonders of the Bow including Leigh Perkins, Lefty Kreh, A.J. McClane, Ernest Schwiebert, and Charles Waterman.. He has written three books about fly fishing. Blue Ribbon Bow was initially published in coffee-table format in 1987, and received the Outdoor Book of the Year Award from the Outdoor Writers of Canada. This edition is now out of print, but a revised and updated edition was published in 1998. Trout Streams of Alberta, a Canadian best-seller, was published in 1996 and received the Andy Russell Nature Writing Award. His latest book, Fly Fishing Western Trout Streams, was published by Stackpole in 2003. Jim's writing appears frequently in major outdoor magazines, including Fly Fisherman, for whom he is Editor At Large. Lynda McLennan has fly-fished in her home province of Alberta since 1976. A natural teacher, she has taught fly fishing for shops and at fly fishing gatherings since 1985. She was a founding director of Casting For Life, a weekend fly fishing retreat for breast cancer survivors. Though her home waters are in southern Alberta, she has fly-fished many places in Western Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand. Her photography appears frequently in numerous outdoor magazines.
