ABOUT THIS REGION  TELEMARK BACKCOUNTRY SKIING

Heli Ski touring in BC's Monashee Mountains

The Monashee Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. These backcountry ski touring packages offer unparalleled solitude in the mountains. This vast skiing area of over 1,000 sq. kilometers is known for epic record snowfalls and has a huge variety of heliskiing terrain for you to enjoy. These heli ski touring packages are a new concept in backcountry skiing. Heli ski touring uses the helicopter to access the remote mountainous regions that ski tourers are seeking and to return to the lodge at the end of the day. The guests and guide ski tour throughout the day using climbing skins and randonee bindings to ascend to the tops of wondrous ski terrain. Of course the helicopter drop in the morning will be on top whenever possible! This allows the backcountry enthusiast easy access to fresh powder and a remote wilderness experience while still enjoying the amenities of the lodge in the evenings. Part of the exclusive appeal of this new service, is the ability to fly out and explore a different region of our vast terrain, each day of your adventure. There is no rush to beat the crowds to your favourite line! Owner operated in all areas: guides, lodge and helicopter, means a top quality product, unparalleled service and the ability to react to the guest's needs.

Heli Ski touring in BC's Monashee Mountains

The Monashee Mountains includes Copeland Pass whcih has held the record for snowfall. Perfectly spaced tree skiing has also made the Monashees famous, as well as spectacular alpine bowls and glaciers with runs up to 2000 metres long. This is comparable to the longest heli skiing runs anywhere in the world. There is also tree skiing (only minutes from the lodge) and as any seasoned heliskier can vouch, this is a vital part to an outstanding heliski vacation. Groups are kept small, with 1 guide per group of 4 skiers and no more than 12 guests at the lodge.

Heli Ski touring in BC's Monashee Mountains

Season: late December to mid March
Requirements: Backcountry touring skis, poles and boots. Physical Fitness: The best training you can do is to get out skiing as much as possible before your trip. If this is not possible then we recommend starting a training program at least 8 weeks prior to your trip. This should include a stretching program and at least 30 minutes of cardio three times a week.
Suggested Items: You may bring your own pack and avalanche shovel/probe, however, you have to be prepared to ski with it all day. You cannot leave packs in the helicopter. Many guests find a very low profile pack that they can wear while sitting in the helicopter to work the best. Keep in mind that each group of four will take turns carrying two guest packs while in the field.
Suggested Clothing: Many guests prefer one piece powder suits but two piece suits will work as well. At a minimum your suit should be very water repellent and many heliskiers find Gore-Tex clothing to work very well and keep them dry. A main consideration is being able to layer your clothing. Cotton is really not a good option and we recommend synthetic base layer or the merino wool underwear. Make sure your goggles work! It’s no fun if you can’t see. There will be gloves, goggles and a limited amount of clothing available for sale at the lodge.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Restrictions: You must be a strong intermediate skier in order to ski at this location. You should be able to negotiate all black diamond terrain within North American ski resort boundaries in any weather or snow conditions and should be able to ski most of a day without becoming unduly tired. You must be comfortable side-slipping, sidestepping up, and kick turning and negotiating any snow conditions. While we will endeavor to match similar skier abilities in each ski group, arriving here with a lack of fitness and poor skiing skills will negatively impact your heliski experience. If you cannot keep up with the groups at all and have totally overestimated your skill and fitness, you may be required to stay at the lodge or end your trip early. We recommend starting a training program at least 6 weeks prior to your ski week and that you have ten or more days skiing in before arriving. We also recommend arriving a few days early to warm up at one of the local ski resorts. Of course the private heli sking packages allow a much greater degree of flexibility as the group can dictate the pace more easily. The group can ski as much or as little as they want.
Maximum Number of People: 12
Equipment Provided: Avalanche beacon training and helicopter safety training. Use of avalanche transceivers.
Transportation: Trips originate and end at the lodge near Revelstoke, BC. For the 7 day package, there is a complimentary shuttle service between the lodge and the major airport at Kelowna, BC. Kelowna is serviced daily by several flights from Calgary Alberta and Vancouver BC, for those coming into Canada from international locations. International travellers should arrange to arrive in Kelowna the day prior to transfer to the lodge.
Accommodations: Includes 3 nights (3 day package) and 7 nights (7 day package) accommodation based on double occupancy. The lodge is road accessible located only 20 minutes from the town of Revelstoke. The luxurious and rustic lodge offers very comfortable accommodations with incredible food and guest services. Staff are dedicated to the highest standards of guest services. The lodge has attained a “Canada Select” Four Star rating, indicating exceptional and superior quality in all areas of facilities and service. The extensive use of wood including huge fir beams imparts an ambiance of relaxed hominess and restfulness. Each guest room has its own private ensuite bathroom, open beam ceilings, comfortable beds with duvets, and is decorated with a rustic luxury theme and tranquility in mind. To top it off, all but one of the rooms overlook the spectacular and breathtaking view of the lake and the snow-laden mountains. Some of our guests will stay in the lodges two new guest cabins. These roomy cabins are brand new, very comfortable and only a few seconds walk from the main lodge. The lodge offers Internet and phone service so you can stay in touch. There is also massage service and an outdoor whirlpool hot tub.
Meal Information: Included in all 3 and 7 day packages. The lodge provides an excellent, healthy and hearty dining experience. Breakfast is usually buffet style with a wide variety of choices. Lunch in the field includes a variety of sandwiches and wraps, hot tea, soup and chocolate. The hearty dinner is usually a set menu. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included as well.
Guide Information: 1 Guide to 4 Skiers. With a combination of over 60 years of local weather and snowpack experience amongst the owners themselves, not including the other guides and pilots involved in the operation, you can rest assured you are in capable hands. It should be noted that all Members of Helicat Canada adhere to operational guidelines set forth by the association to ensure a high degree of safety for their guests. Safety is the primary concern of each and every operator. Two guides are fully certified international mountain guides (ACMG and IFMGA) and professional members of the CAA (Canadian Avalanche Association). A third guide has level 2 CSGA guide certification and is a professional member of the CAA. There is a comprehensive Risk Management Program and Rescue Plan in place with regards to skiing and flying. There is daily contact with the Canadian Avalanche Association and are contributors to this association’s industry information exchange. Years of experience in the heliskiing industry allow your guides to meet or exceed the professional association’s high standards.
Weather Information: Epic amounts of snow! This area of the Monashees is known for deep snow. The west slope of the Monashees is the first mountainous area east of BC’s Coast Mountains. Because of this there is near coastal amounts of snow with cooler interior temperatures. This high quality snow, coupled with perfectly spaced trees, open bowls and glaciers results in what many experienced skiers consider to be the best deep powder helicopter skiing in the world.
