Gros Morne is an area of great natural beauty with a rich variety of wildlife. It is a stunning example of Western Newfoundland's highlands, and was established as a National Park in 1973. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It's human history goes back almost 5000 years with the arrival of Maritime Archaic Indians who crossed over from Labrador. Vikings came to this area about 1000 years ago and their settlement can be seen at L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. Wildlife seen in the park include black bears, moose, woodland caribou and a multitude of birds, with 239 species on the Gros Morne National Park checklist. The tour is mostly hiking, and includes the Tablelands, Green Garden Trail, Western Brook Pond, Gros Morne Mountain, Big Lookout - Discovery Centre and Bakers Brook Falls. A boat cruise is also included on Western Brook 'Pond'.
