ABOUT THIS REGION  HIKING

Vancouver Island Tapaltos Beach Hike

This hiking tour on Tapaltos Beach, a remote beach on the west side of Vancouver Island, is a great way to experience a truly secluded part of the Island. This trip starts in Port Alberni, a town that is centrally located on Vancouver Island allowing you to visit many of the Island's attractions in a day. You start this excursion by enjoying a 2-hour drive on a logging road to Bamfield, a tiny, unique, west coast community on the shores of Barkley Sound. Along the way we may meet one or more of the huge off-highway, west coast logging trucks. From the trail head, there is a one-hour hike to a secluded beach through ancient old growth cedar and hemlock forest. This is real west coast rainforest! The vegetation is so tangled you can imagine gnomes and fairies staring back at you! And the puddles can be deep and muddy here as the trail does not have boardwalks.

Vancouver Island Tapaltos Beach Hike

Once we reach Taplatos Beach it will be close to lunch time. The beach itself is completely remote. It is as if you have gone back in time. You half-expect a native canoe to come around the point and land on the beach. At one end of the beach, there are fascinating tide-pools with abundant life in them. There will be time to do a little birding along the way and when we get to the beach. Or, if you prefer, you can have a little beach R&R. We'll supply a gourmet lunch and refreshments as well as rubber boots for those who want them. Be prepared for a full 10.5 hour day of fun!
