ABOUT THIS REGION  DRIVE TOURS - VAN, BUS, CAR

Pacific Rim Circle Tour - Port Alberni & Ucluelet

This excursion is a microcosm of the landscape on Vancouver Island. This is an ideal excursion of time-challenged travellers who want to get the flavour of Vancouver Island in a day. It is also an easy excursion being suitable for grandparents to young families. The guests will enjoy a scenic drive by van from Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, BC along one of the largest lakes on the island, down a mountain river valley to Ucluelet, a village tucked into a cove on the outside of Vancouver Island and a view of the the rugged outside coast from the lighthouse at Amphitrite Point. The road is paved the entire way, this being Highway 4, the main road to the west coast of Vancouver Island. The trip back to Port Alberni is via the MV Frances Barkley (a small freighter plying the waters of Barklay Sound).

Guests will stop at unique features along the way for interpretation, birding, or to enjoy the scenery. Here is a lists of the stops: - SPROAT FALLS where the local indigenous culture had their winter camp. The guide will comment on how fishing was done, the number and species of salmon using the fish ladder, and tell a story of a massacre that occurred 300 years ago. - SPROAT LAKE viewpoint at a historic plaque giving some of the history of the settle ment of the area. The guide will elabourate on the plaque. - TAYLOR RIVER Rest Stop is where the guests will find out about the Tay Fire, a huge fire that threatened to destroy Port Alberni. The remnants of it are still visible on the mountain slopes. Washroom facilities are available here. - KENNEDY CANYON is a unique, private and exquisite spot where the Kennedy River flows through a narrow rocky gorge over two falls and into deep clear pool at the bottom. There is evidence of how water has worn the once rugged rock into smooth holes and curves. This is a very special place! - AMPHITRITE POINT is the location of a lighthouse and the trail head of the famous Wild Pacific Trail. Guests will arrive at this spot just before lunch. We will have enough time to enjoy a gourmet lunch and spend some time walking the trail before returning to the public wharf to meet the MV Frances Barkley. - MV FRANCES BARKLEY is the younger of two vessels that serve the remote communities and lodges scattered about Barkley Sound. The other, more famous, Vessel is called the Lady Rose. The scenery through the Broken Group, a small archipelago popular with kayakers, is world class. Just stunning. The stops are a little unpredictable being determined by the deliveries the ship has to make as it cruises up the inlet, or fjord back to Port Alberni.
