ABOUT THIS REGION  SALTWATER FISHING - CHARTERS

Summer salmon fishing charters in Ucluelet, BC

Fishin for salmon and halibut on these day charters from Ucluelet, British Columbia. The summer season of May to September is considered prime time for sports fishing here on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Fantastic inshore and offshore Chinook, Coho and halibut fishing make for non-stop action. Large mixed runs of Chinook, Coho and halibut begin to migrate and feed in both inshore and offshore areas, following thick balls of baits such as herring, pilchards (sardines), needlefish, squid and krill. Ucluelet has the most consistent and dependable fishing on the British Columbia coast due to its location and access to the migrating fish and nutrient rich offshore and inshore water. Successful catch limits of Chinook, Coho and halibut are normal for this time of the year. Chinook salmon average from 5 to 50 plus pounds while halibut are generally 15 to 40 pounds on average. Full day "salmon and halibut combo" trips are the most effective and popular way to fish the west coast of Vancouver Island because it allows you to travel up to 25 miles offshore, giving you access to some of the most spectacular fishing for both salmon and halibut. Each trip is customized to where the best fishing is located and to what species the guests want to target. Decisions on where to fish and what to fish for are always discussed between the guide and guests before leaving the harbour.

WHAT TO EXPECT - The day begins at dawn, which is usually around 5:00 am to 5:30 am. The usual routine for May, June and July would be to head offshore to the halibut grounds twenty three miles out. The halibut grounds take approximately one hour to reach. After limiting out on halibut, you then spend the rest of the day fishing for chinook and coho. Quite often you fish for the salmon right next to the halibut grounds or on the banks closer to Ucluelet. August and September you might spend some time fishing for trophy chinook salmon along the rocks and then go offshore for halibut and coho. Most people fish for at least 2-3 days in order to get the full fishing experience. The trips are customized to where the best fishing action is and to what species the guests want to target. Your guide always believes in getting input from his guest before you even leave the harbour. Then he will make the group decision on where to go and what fish to target. After a full day of fishing you generally arrive back in the harbour approximately 2:00 pm. You finish the day by pulling crab traps and clean/icing your catch. Your fully guided charter includes bait, tackle, shaved ice, and fish cleaning. For the half day tours WHAT TO EXPECT - Generally, you leave the dock around 3:00 pm and fish through the evening tide. You usually fish Barkley Sound, Wyaa Point or out on the banks up to 12 miles offshore. It all depends on the time of year, weather, targeted species and where the best fishing is located. Chinook and Coho fishing can be very productive during this time of the day. Besides catching fish, enjoy the abundant wildlife viewing with regular sitings of humpback, gray, and orca whales, sea lions, and bald eagles. Afternoon or evening, fishing and wildlife viewing can be a peaceful and serene experience. Another positive is the lack of boats and fishing pressure during the afternoon and evening bite. Watching the sun slowly set on the western horizon is something you will never forget.
