The mountains along the Southwest coast of Newfoundland are made up of rocks that are thought to be over 500 million years old, and are among some of the oldest on the planet. The area is home to thousands of large rocks and boulders, known as erratics, that were dropped from the glaciers as they crossed the land. Large rounded, oval shaped hills called drumlins are also plentiful in the area. They were formed during the last glacial retreat from the region. The plants that are found here thrive in a habitat where salt sea air and short growing seasons are the natural occurrence. Dwarfed trees like pine and balsam fir are scattered right to the ocean’s edge, while much of the plant life is similar to that found in the Arctic. Due to the environment, many of the same species of marine organisms found in the oceans and ponds here have also been found by scientists in the high Arctic regions.

| Suggested Items: Camera, binoculars, daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle. |

Light weight clothing is recommended for underneath as it does get quite warm in summer on board the boat as well as on the hikes. As hiking will be over hard ground and not through brush, your preference of either long or short pants is acceptable. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended for all walking tours and boots with non-skid soles are recommended for the boat tours.

| Weather Information: The weather in Newfoundland is often “changeable” as the locals say. Summer temperatures are usually warm and pleasant but visitors should be equipped for cooler wet weather as well. September brings the fresh, crisp mornings and October can leave you breathless with the number of still days.

| Comments: These tours are all subject to weather. If by chance we cannot do a certain tour because of the weather, we are able to adjust and still come up with some form of entertainment for our guests that will compensate for the loss of the day. We have been known to switch tours as to better accommodate the guests once they get here and we see the weather for that period or we receive feedback from the guests on what they prefer to do and see. The clients needs and wishes are what we take into consideration to ensure they leave with the best possible tour we can offer |
