ABOUT THIS REGION  BACKPACKING

Hiking the Dena Cho Trail in central Yukon

Hike the scenic Dena Cho Trail on this backpacking expedition into central Yukon. This ancient First Nation Trail of outstanding beauty links the communities of Faro and Ross River. First Nation people have used it for thousands of years. The trail runs between the forests and the bluffs overlooking the Pelly River and offers magnificent views and good wildlife watching opportunities depending on the season. There are four shelters along the trail and "Abby" the Fjord pony will carry some of the equipment and food. In early June thousands of wild roses bloom along the trail. You will hike an average of 3 to 7 hours per day and take enough breaks to enjoy the scenery. The camps are very nicely located. In addition to the guided hike, you have the option of spending one night in the motel in Ross River and return to Faro by canoe on the Pelly River. You will enjoy beautiful cottonwood and spruce forests, spectacular rock formations and hoodoos. Many sandy beaches offer first class camping (and swimming) spots!

Hiking the Dena Cho Trail in central Yukon

Central Yukon hosts a unique diversitiy of wildlife. It is one of the richest areas in the Yukon. In the backcountry you will find caribou, moose, wolf and bear as well as the rare Fannin sheep. Elk and even cougar have also been spotted. Salmon spawn in the major rivers and streams. Many freshwater fishes including arctic grayling, lake trout and pike can be found in the lakes. Various migratory birds, especially sandhill cranes, fly over the Tintina trench during migration in May and September. The town of Faro is located on the north side of the Tintina trench that marks the division of the two essential components of Yukon geology. The rocks north-east of the trench are 300 to 1000 million years old, mainly sedimentary and represent the ancient North American margin. They were almost completely covered with glaciers during the last Ice Age. The terrain includes rolling uplands, groups of mountains and level tablelands dissected by deeply-cut broad valleys. The mountains south of the valley are sharp and high and more recent (20 to 300 million years). The Pelly river meanders trough the trench before flowing into the Yukon river about three hundred kilometers north-west from Faro.
