ABOUT THIS REGION  HELI-SNOWBOARDING

Spectacular heli-snowboarding in the Rockies

If you enjoy heli-snowboarding in the wild, uninhabited mountains of the northern Rockies of Canada, we invite you on this heli-boarding experience of a lifetime. This heli-board area in the northern Canadian Rockies, located in the Hart and Muskwa Ranges, is just now being discovered by skiers and boarders from all over the world, and is fast becoming known for its most incredible and spectacular snow quality...the Dry, Northern Powder. Wide open Alpine Ridges and vast bowls surrounded by jagged peaks are waiting for you to carve turns through the sparkling deep champagne powder. These open runs average between 2100 and 3300 vertical feet (650-1000 vertical meters). For many Heli-Boarders there is nothing to compare to 'tree skiing'. We have discovered deep valleys with naturally well spaced, mature trees and and abundance of snow which will exceed the expectations of the most demanding snowboarders. A large number of these runs are only minutes from the lodge and can easily be utilized during poor weather conditions. Our most spectacular tree runs are steep-pitched with over 3700 feet (1100 eters) of vertical...a dream come true for most discriminatory snowboarders. In percentages our terrain is 40% gentle, 40% steep and 20% very steep.

Spectacular heli-snowboarding in the Rockies

Season: late December to early May
Requirements: Personal snowboards and boots. We highly recommend snowboards designed for powder snow.
Suggested Items: Camera, daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle
Suggested Clothing: Heliboarding, as well as our other exciting winter activities, will cause you to generate heat when you're active, and cool down during sitting/waiting periods. For your outer layer we highly recommend a one-piece suit OR pants with a good bib feature that protects your core, plus a well-designed jacked with powder flaps, zipper covers, good pockets and quality fabrics. You'll need somewhere for your toiletry items, accessories and goggle wipes! Under your outer layer we recommend a layering system of light to mid-weight garments made of polyester (wicking fabrics) fleece. Cotton garments are NOT recommended as they don't dry with your body heat, and are the cause of hypothermia in most outdoor situations. The same goes for socks... quality wool or synthetic socks are going to make a difference to your physical comfort and safety.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Restrictions: We caution you that Heli-boarding is not for the novice snowboarder. You should have considerable experience snowboarding BLUE and BLACK RUNS at downhill resorts. We recommend good physical preparation prior to your heli-board experience... the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your heli-board vacation.
Maximum Number of People: 20
Equipment Provided: Transportation to and from Ft. St. John, tranceivers, use of the lodge facilities.
Transportation: Trips originate and end in Fort St. John, BC. Guests arrive in Fort St. John, British Columbia either from Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton via Air Canada on the morning flight. Guests who arrive the day before pick up will stay at the Quality Inn Hotel in Fort St. John and will be picked up the next with new arrivals. Your shuttle bus and hosts will pick you up and you'll then spend a delightful 1.5 hours driving along the Peace River to the tiny historic community of Hudson's Hope, a former Hudson's Bay trading post. After your 1.5 hour trip along the mighty Peace River, your staff will assist you in registration and provides you with your information packages regarding the lodge, safety regulations, area maps and everything you'll require to make memories.
Accommodations: Welcome to your wilderness home in the Northern Rockies! This picture-perfect lodge fits harmoniously into 300 private acres and provides magnificent views of Williston Lake and the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The newly built eight-suite facility, designed in the historic "square log - dovetail corner" style, enables your hosts to provide guests with single or double occupancy accommodations in an atmosphere of intimacy, yet with a feeling of openess, and relaxation. Each room is tastefully decorated with careful attention to detail, and has it's own private bath and satellite internet connection. There is also a private chalet with three suites available, right next to the main lodge for a more intimate setting for smaller groups. The common areas include the Great Room, where after a wonderful day in the mountains and a superb meal, you can join friends by the fireplace. Enjoy an evening of great music, the finest of beverages, and a stroll on the wrap-around deck for a soak in the outdoor hot tub under the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The lodge also offers a fully stocked bar, sauna, outside hot tub, stretch and fitness room, fully equipped meeting room and laundry facilties with a specially designed boot room with boot and glove dryers. The gift shop carries a selection of fine outdoor and casual clothing, and local art and souveneirs. It also carries accessories for your many adventures, including: gloves, eyewear, walking poles, custom-made knives and locally tied flies.
Meal Information: The lodge caters to an International clientel and the menu reflects the tastes of the guests. Each evening your Chef will prepare interesting and delicious plate service dinners, one each day from a different country. For example, Saturday night is "Germany"; a wild game dinner with all the traditional German trimmings and deserts. Sunday is "France" when you might be serve Veal medallions in a burgandy mushroom sauce and delicate fresh vegetables. Monday's dinner offers our representation of a typical American dinner.... stuffed roast turkey, cranberries, baked yams, fresh vegetables and hot apple pie with ice cream. Canada's fare on Tuesday features a buffalo steak BBQ, baked beans, home fried potatoes, and depending on the temperature outside, it may be accompanied by homemade French onion soup (the Quebec recipe, of course). Wednesday, brings Spain and Pia... and the list goes on. Each day a different country, a different meal. To some of our guests one of these dinners could very well be a "home cooked meal" All meals are plate service and three to four courses. Special dietary needs are catered to upon request and with advanced notice. Coffee and tea are served all day long; juices and softdrinks upon request. Please note that all meals are subject to the availability of ingredients.
Guide Information: Your snowboard guides are certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG), the International Federation of Mountain Guides (IFMGA/UIAGM) and/or the Canadian Ski Guides Association (CSGA). In addition, your guides belong to the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA). As well as public information and education in avalanche science and rescue techniques, the CAA implements a data-sharing system that aidsyour guides in making accurate assessements of snow stability when they correlate it with local field data. Pacific Western Helicopters Ltd. supply the helicopters. They follow a rigorous schedule of safety inspections and maintenance by their own engineers on our site, or at their base in Mackenzie, BC. Your pilots have extensive mountain flying experience, have taken part in mountain training programs, and have superb local knowledge. The pilots and guides work together to bring you the best skiing day possible. Pilots and/or guides report their location to the base station every half hour. The guides carry rescue, first aid, and backcountry survival equipment in their packs. In addition, rescue equipment, survival supplies and additional first aid supplies are carried in the helicopter. The base station is equipped with additional back-up supplies for field rescues as well as incidents that arise at or near the lodge. There are also completely equipped rescue caches in several different areas in the Mountains. In the event of an emergency, your guides and pilots are trained in every possible scenario. The helicopter is used for transportation, perhaps for direct transfer to the hospital, or to a waiting ground transfer vehicle. Guests must cover the cost for evacuation by helicopter at their own expense. Purchase of cancellation and evacuation insurance is recommended.
Weather Information: Weather conditions in the Northern Rockes are ideally suited for Heli-Boarding. The dry winter climate offers temperatures which range from -5 celsius(23 fahrenheit) down to -20 celsius or -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to the weather, temperatures can drop down as low as minus 40 celsius or -40 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods of time. For the most part, snow conditions historically range from good to outstanding 80% of our season. The effect of being on the Great Divide and in the "rainshadow" of the eastward moving Pacific air, this area receives an abundance of percipitation, on an average 3.7 meters or 45 feet annually providing us with a base of 3-4 meters or 10-12 feet annually! Storms dump blankets of Dry Powder onto our mountain tops and valley bottoms regularily, but they don't linger long, and always give way to magnificient, sunny blue skies. Again, the weather is unpredictable and no guarantees can be offered during your stay in the Northern Rockies. With the tree line being at around 1600 meters (5200 feet) and some pick ups at 730 meters (2400 feet), your guides always strive to seek out snowboarding possibilities during the most challenging conditions in these sheltered areas. Your safety will always be our first concern. On average, there are only 5 days out of our 19 weeks season that we cannot snowboard at all.
