Ellesmere Island sea kayaking expeditions
Join our guides on one of these exciting sea kayaking trips around Ellesmere Island in Arctic Canada. Ellesmere Island is one of the world's most pristine wilderness areas and one of the most remote places in the world for a kayaking adventure. On the Fjords of Ellesmere Island package you will travel to the Arctic fjordland of Kane Basin on Canada's northeastern Ellesmere Island, at Latitude 79° North. This is a remote rugged coastline-breathtaking fjords, intriguing islands and a wildlife oasis where silence is broken by melt water dripping from stranded, dream-like icebergs. It is a place where 24-hour sunlight hits ancient ice, high peaks and headlands plunge into tidewater and hanging glaciers, and hoards of walrus snore on ice islands. This is home to Narwhal, the fabled unicorn of the sea, and to seals, polar bears, Arctic fox and Arctic hares. In this dramatic fjordland we retrace the footsteps of the earliest Polar explorers, and in your kayaks you travel as the ancestral Inuit might have done. These expeditions pass by numerous and hauntingly "alive" habitation and hunting sites of prehistoric peoples. Strewn along this coast are ancient winter house excavations, tent rings, kayak stands and stone fox traps - ruins of the Thule culture, people who lived along these shores a thousand years ago.

On the Footsteps of the Polar Explorers package, you will participate in the most challenging Arctic expedition, following in the footsteps of several late-nineteenth century Polar explorers. The objective (wind, ice cover and weather permitting) is to paddle to the remote and historic Pim Island. Situated between Ellesmere Island and Greenland at the north end of Smith Sound, Pim Island was the over-wintering site for three noteworthy expeditions: the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition commanded by Lt. Adolphus Greely (1881-1884); the 1898 Norwegian Polar Expedition led by Otto Sverdrup; and the Robert Stein Expedition of 1899 to 1901. The island was also established as a depot site by several of Robert Peary's North Pole expeditions between 1898 and 1909. The cold dry Arctic holds the past as if the inhabitants left only yesterday. In testimony to this are the intriguing historic sites of Fram Harbour, Camp Clay and Fort Magnesia, each of which we attempt to visit. This trip accesses a stunning area of natural and cultural drama, and offers the privilege of being among the first modern-day visitors to some of the Arctic's most fascinating historic sites.
