Enter the exciting world of caving on one of these cave tours into the Horne Lake Caves. Horne Lake is nestled in the Beaufort Range of Vancouver Island. Crystal clear waters and spectacular limestone cliffs and caves make it an outdoor lovers' paradise. There are several tours to choose from. On the 3 hour adventure check out the mysteries of the Vancouver Island Underworld! This adventure takes you through marbled passageways filled with amazing crystal formations. Climb a waterfall, see ancient fossils, squeeze through the ceiling galleries on this fabulous adventure, a small taste of "wild" caving! Some tight passages, short climbs and lots of cave scrambling. No experienced necessary on this tour.
The 4 hour tour is a wild and challenging expedition that provides instruction and experience in basic rock climbing while navigating through this amazing underground environment. No previous climbing experience necessary. The adventure begins in the "Siphon Room" and continues down a series of vertical drops. Your guides provide one-on-one instruction for even inexperienced climbers and all equipment to rope your way down to the Amazing "Achilles Pit". This tour will involve crawling through small passages and some rugged climbing. For the more advanced caver the 5 hour tour allows participants to climb and rappel in a wild cave environment. Descend the seven story Rainbarrel "ON RAPPEL" and visit the amazing "China Shop" at the very end of this amazing cave! Explorers will return to the surface by climbing back up the Rainbarrel on a wild cable ladder. Not for the faint of heart!
Restrictions: The 3 hour tour is suitable for kids 8 years old and up, the longer tours are restricted to adults 15 years or older.
Equipment Provided: All caving and safety equipment.
Transportation: The caves are located 60 km north of Nanaimo, 55km south of Courtenay off the Island Highway 19 or 19A. Turn at the Provincial Park signs at the Horne Lake Exit and follow the signs for 12 km along the gravel road. Drive with headlights on and watch out for logging trucks.
Accommodations: Not included in the package but available at local hotels and lodges.
Guide Information: The staff of professional guides and instructors have been selected for their experience in the outdoors and ability to provide each participant with an outstanding educational experience. All instructors are required to attend comprehensive training courses that constantly improve and develop their skills.
Weather Information: Summer temperatures average from 10 to 25 degrees celsius.
Comments: No previous climbing or caving experience needed for the 3 and 4 hour tour. The 5 hour tour does require previous rappeling experience.
