ABOUT THIS REGION  SALTWATER FISHING - LODGES

River & ocean fishing for salmon and halibut

Knight Inlet is a natural wonder, arguably the most scenic area on the British Columbia coast. Knight Inlet contains huge ice fields feeding multiple waterfalls, steep mountains rising vertically from the water's edge, misty bays, exciting rivers, and, most important, it is a superb fishing area. In the spring, feeder and mature Kings feast on our resident schools of herring and oolichans while large numbers of wild-stock steelhead head for their spawning pools in our river. In the summer time Kings move through the area, joined by schools of Coho, Chum, and Pink Salmon. All these times give you plenty of heart-stopping action. From June through September the bottom fishing comes on strong - Halibut, Ling Cod, Red Snapper, and Rock Cod provide not only exciting moments, but also some mouthwatering dishes. While waiting for the big strike you have time to enjoy the scenery and the plentiful wildlife. Knight Inlet is home to grizzly and black bear, mountain goat, orca (Killer Whale), sea lion, seal, bald eagle, and many other varieties. Some of the guests try for a Grand Slam: catching a Tyee king salmon (over 30 Ibs.) or a halibut over 50 Ibs. combined with sighting orca or grizzly, black bear, and a sea lion, all in one day.

The season starts with the float lodge, in April, 80 miles into Knight Inlet, at Rainbow Falls. This is one of the most picturesque spots in North America. You are surrounded by snow-capped peaks rising vertically out of the blue-green glacial inlet, and fish by crashing waterfalls. You will watch bears grazing along the beach and bald eagles soaring overhead. You are also on top of the early runs of feeder Chinook ( up to 35 Ibs.). Generally, the action is great, the fish plentiful. This has become a favorite time for many returning guests. By early June many of the salmon are working their way further out of the inlet. You fish Chinooks (Kings), combined with an increasing number of trophy Tyee, from the float lodge, which we move to Tribune Channel. The past few years have shown that this location gives the largest selection of productive fishing spots. You continue fishing this area, out of the main land lodge, until mid September, landing super catches of all species of salmon, including lots of Tyee as well as Halibut and Ling Cod. During the summer months [July & August] the land lodge opens at Minstrel Island, and continues fishing the middle inlet area. This area has proven very successful for Tyee Chinook Salmon [top off at 75 lb.] and Halibut [top off at 185 lb]. This is also your location and time for the river fishing side trip [Coho Salmon]. The Kakweiken is a class 2 restricted river. In the summer, mid July through September, all four species of salmon run up the river to spawn in the upper reaches. They provide some incredibly exciting battles. A 20 lb. coho on 8 lb. test line can keep you busy for as long as an hour. This is a real bonus side trip to your ocean fishing adventure. In July and August you also have the Float Lodge available. It is towed to the Pitcairn location. From here you fish the Inside Passage in the waters of Johnstone Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait. The runs of mature salmon, heading to their rivers on the mainland of British Columbia or on Vancouver Island, must pass through here. This is an excellent spot for catching Tyee, as well as Coho, Pink, and Chum. Bottom catches are also good, with some of the largest Halibut caught right off our float (our record is 185 Ibs.). Ling Cod are jigged in nearby Blackfish Sound. This trip offers two lodges, three areas, and six months to choose your trip from - all of them productive, all of them with their advantages.
