ABOUT THIS REGION  FISHING DAY TRIPS - RIVERS

Great river fishing on the Bow and Crowsnest River

Experience some of the best river fly fishing in the world on one of these river fishing packages on the Bow or Crowsnest River. Your guides will take you to some of Alberta's and North America's finest fly fishing rivers, with the famous Bow River just minutes to the north and the Crowsnest River to the south. Between these two incredible fish hatcheries are an abundance of mountain rivers, streams and lakes. Some of the better fisheries are the Oldman River, the Livingstone River, Highwood River, and the Sheep River. Your guides fly fish most of these rivers and creeks downstream from their headwaters, nestled in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, close to the Continental Divide. Trips are also available to some of Alberta's picturesque Alpine Lakes via horseback, where cutthroat, rainbow, or golden trout are easily taken on several different fly patterns.

Great river fishing on the Bow and Crowsnest River

The "Blue Ribbon" Bow River is world renowned, and for a good reason: rainbow trout and brown trout growing to sizes upwards of 28" and 30" in length. This river has been fished by many famous fly fishermen over the years, and has been quoted as "possibly the best dry fly river in the world." The Bow offers all types of water in this 50 miles, from long flats where Blue-winged Olive hatches occur in April and May, and again later in September and October, with swarms of Caddis flies blanketing the top of the river in late May through August, to plenty of riffles and holes for the nymph and streamer fisherman. Nymph and streamer fishing is year round on the Bow with great success due to the many bends and riffles this river offers. The lower Bow averages 350 feet in width, with a very slow decline in elevation on its path to the eastern Alberta border. It has been estimated to hold anywhere from 1800 to 2500 fish per mile through this section of the river, with fish averaging 16 to 18 inches in length. The Crowsnest River is divided into 2 sections along this stretch, because of the Lundbreck Falls. The lower water is home for rainbows and browns that average 15 to 17 inches, with cutthroat and brookies found as well. Bull trout also inhabit these waters downstream and have been caught up to 22 inches on some of our popular streamers. Upstream is home to mainly rainbows, which can be caught year round on nymphs, along with summer hatches of mayflies, stonefly, and caddis, adding to the excitement of the day.

Season: April to October
Requirements: Fishing gear. We recommend you bring 2 rods with you. A 4 to 5 weight is great for some nymph and all dry fly fishing and a 6-7 weight is excellent for nymph and streamers. If you are limited to just one rod, then we highly suggest a 6 weight. Floating line is a must and a sinking tip weight forward is nice for streamer fishing. Waders are recommended and a felt soled boot to stop slippage.
